The Occupy Wall Street protesters say they’re demonstrating against capitalism. Sure they are… In January of 2011, Facebook was valued at $50 Billion dollars. In February of 2011, Twitter was valued at $10 Billion. In March of 2011, YouTube was valued at $36 Billion and Google was valued at $190 Billion. None of these companies would exist without capitalism, but the anti-capitalist leftists currently occupying Wall Street will never, ever protest these companies. They’re even organizing their protests through their websites. Why is the left’s hatred of capitalism so selective? Google is a publicly traded corporation; its executives feed off the so-called profiteering of Wall Street just as deliberately as Goldman Sachs or any of their other boogeyman du jour . And if we’re talking how these corporations make profits, why doesn’t the left get asbent out of shape over Google and Facebook selling their personal information to marketers as they do with banks charging interest on loans? Have you noticed that all of the anti-capitalism protesters seem to have cell phones, computers, video cameras and TV’s? How would these products exist and be available at an affordable price for the average person without capitalism? Consider the ultimate irony of this scenario: A person learns about an anti-capitalism protest on Twitter, attends the protest, captures a video on his personal cell phone, turns on the laptop computer he bought at Best Buy, logs in to Google, uploads his video to YouTube and then posts it on Facebook. By the time this “protester” is getting thumbs up from his comrades on Facebook, he has participated in multiple transactions purely thanks to the excesses of capitalism. How many of these anti-capitalist protesters would be willing to throw their iPhones into the Hudson River? How many of them will permanently shut down their Facebook and YouTube accounts in protest? None of them will, because ultimately, capitalism is fine with them as long as it serves their purposes. They don’t hate capitalism or wealth; they just want the government to take wealth from others and give to them so they don’t have to go through the normal channels that those individuals with wealth went through — practical higher education, working above and beyond their peers, saving, investment, risk, etc. In addition to their selective corporation hatred, the proponents of this movement voted overwhelmingly for Obama, the one person they will never blame for destroying their economic opportunities. Yet they fail to note that Obama got more campaign cash from Wall Street than any other candidate in 2008. They ignore the fact that Goldman Sachs was the top donor to the Obama 2008 campaign. “Occupy Wall Street” is the ultimate expression of liberal hypocrisy. They are fooling no one but themselves.
